Wine & Design

January 17, 2010

Sure, by night I am a Food Blog Mobster, but by day I am a graphic designer. The worlds of design and food often collide. I find myself drawn to pretty, interesting and creative packaging when I am grocery shopping. When perusing wine, I must admit I am a sucker for labels, and will buy a wine solely because I like the look of it. This is not the best approach to wine shopping, I am aware, and I have gotten some wines that definitely did not live up to the promises of their lovely labels. That said, there are some really really neat wine labels out there.

A search of design websites yielded lots of wonderful examples. Like these:

Love the use of negative space on these! The more I look at them the more I like them!

thumbs up!

Wine is fun! Love these fun labels.

example of wine I bought because it was pretty, but was disappointed by the taste.

And the crafter in me is completely in love with these embroidered labels:

so, so pretty!

For more, check out  this link, which has lots of gorgeous designs. And there are even more here, here and here!

Label and Package design isn’t all about looking good. Some really good designers can insert some sort of function, making for really innovative and useful packaging…

I wish every bottle of wine had this feature!

I love the idea of this label with a peel-off section that you can keep for future reference. It would be great if all wine bottles had this, but until then, here is a tutorial on how to remove wine labels that you want to save in a journal.

Looking beyond the label/bottle itself, here’s a fantastic idea for a wine box:

The wine case becomes a lamp! Brilliant! (literally)

Do you pay attention to the look of your wine bottle? Are you less likely to buy gimmicky or ugly bottles? Do you think the label design plays a part in how you choose new wines? I would love love love to design wine labels. Until then, I will just keep enjoying wine, admiring their packaging, and learning more about wine labels (added this book to my wishlist!).

I have to say that I choose wine like I choose books: By the art on the cover. Unless I’m after something specific, I am very likely to by a wine with a unique and artistic label – of course I’m a graphic designer too, so maybe that factors in. I have cousins in Baltimore who have wallpapered their entire pantry with wine labels and it like going to the Louvre.

This is a great post! You have a great talent for design. I’ve actually started a collection of interesting wine bottles at home. For the wine lovers out there, I thought I’d share a great wine list I came across the other night at Sunset 44 Bistro. There’s a wine here for everyone and some of the bottles have great designs as well!
